Will You Have to Pay for This!? [Cosplay Studio Unusual Incident Files No. 4] Isn't This Property Damage...? The "Please Don't Break Things" Incident

Columns / Essays

Cosplay photography is a dreamlike experience where you can recreate the world of a series in an extraordinary setting.
But behind that experience lies the hard work and dedication of the studio operators.

So once again, Cospot Media worked with actual studio operators to conduct our own research into these unusual incidents.
We hope this article helps you avoid trouble when using a studio and enjoy a smooth, pleasant shoot.

Let’s jump right into the incident episodes.

“Do we really have to tell people not to break someone else’s property!?”

Cosplay studios are filled with wonderful decorations, carefully crafted props, and even valuable furniture that you would rarely get to interact with in daily life.
Unfortunately, some visitors apparently ignore the rules, touch these important items without permission, and end up breaking them.

Even more shocking, they reportedly left the damaged items as they were and went home without saying a word.

If something happens, it should be common sense to report it to the studio staff first…!!
Perhaps because they knew they were at fault, they said nothing at all.

Property damage…!? I’m glad no one was hurt, but that’s something for the affected party to say!

If something like that happens, report it immediately!! Absolutely.
Studio staff will take into account whether it was intentional or truly an accident.
(Of course, the studio decides how to respond.)

If You Break Something, Be Sure to Report It!

As for damage, we’ve often tried to handle it by saying, “As long as the customer isn’t hurt, we’re okay with that…”
But some people seem to take that as, “So it’s okay to break things,” which was shocking.
We also struggle with people who damage something and never report it.

There have been cases where decorations fixed in place with hardware were forcibly ripped off, apparently because someone assumed they could be removed.

Please always check with staff before trying to remove anything. You should be able to confirm it properly without forcibly pulling on it.
The issue is not just the damage itself. The bigger problem is when there is “no report” afterward.

If this kind of behavior continues, it could lead to restrictions on shooting in carefully designed studio spaces.

How would you feel if a costume or wig you lent to a friend came back ruined?

Anyone would feel sadness and anger if something they owned was broken.

The same is true of studio decorations and equipment. They are precious items prepared with time and care by the staff.
If they are damaged without a word, it naturally becomes a painful and upsetting experience.

It also causes trouble for other guests who were looking forward to using the studio next.

It’s understandable to think, “I broke it, so maybe I’ll get yelled at…” but reporting it can often prevent the situation from becoming a major problem.
More than that, telling the staff properly is simply the right thing to do.
Let’s all treat these spaces with care so everyone can continue sharing them.
